MX-5 Hydraulic Handbrakes

If your handbrake is struggling with initiating drifts and preventing you from taking more speed when driving round corners, a hydraulic handbrake may be just what you need. Here at BOFI, we understand that regular handbrakes don’t always prove effective when you need them to. Perfect for locking up the rear wheels of your Mazda, our MX-5 Hydraulic Handbrakes ensure that your drifting is not limited by the standard handbrake.

While road cars are factory-fitted with cable-operated handbrakes, many performance cars opt for hydraulically operated alternatives because they’re better suited to track days, motorsport competitions and gymkhanas as they’re more consistent. Hydraulic handbrakes provide a positive feel when the pressure is applied, giving you the confidence to get the car sideways.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hydraulic handbrake?
A hydraulic handbrake is plumbed directly into the braking hydraulics, meaning it will provide a more positive feel for the amount of pressure being applied. Unlike cable-operated handbrakes, the braking will also remain more consistent over time as there’s no cable to stretch.

Are hydraulic handbrakes road legal in the UK?
Hydraulic parking brakes are legal in the UK, but not as the only means of operation. Section 1.1.6. Parking brake lever or control of the UK MOT Manual says that hydraulic handbrakes must be used to assist the application or release of a mechanical brake on cars first used on or after 1 January 1968.

This is because hydraulic handbrakes usually do not have the capability to lock into position when parked, which obviously isn’t ideal for street parking on a hill or the like.

What is the function of the master cylinder in a hydraulic handbrake system?
The master cylinder functions as a hydraulic pump, producing the necessary pressure to activate the rear brake calipers. It exerts pressure on the brake fluid, which locks the rear wheels when the driver engages the handbrake.
