Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when it’s time to replace my radiator?
From the factory, OEM Mazda MX-5 radiators had glossy black plastic headers and clean, unclogged pipes. Over time, and thousands of heat cycles, this plastic turns a stodgy brown/green colour, indicating that the plastic header has become brittle. If yours looks like this, its days are numbered. The cooling system’s pressure builds as the temperature does, so if you’re throwing it around a track or even going for a spirited B-road drive, the pressure may build to the point where the plastic cracks or, worst-case scenario, the header explodes.

Will I need an MX-5 performance radiator for my forced induction build?
When you add boost, either by turbocharging or supercharging your MX-5, an upgraded MX-5 radiator is always recommended. Even on the road, the OEM radiator won’t be able to cope with the heat output of a boosted engine, and you’ll begin to experience overheating, potentially damaging your engine.

How easy is it to install an MX-5 radiator upgrade?
If you’re reasonably handy with a socket set and other basic tools, you shouldn’t have too much of an issue swapping your stock rad out for an upgraded item: the new one simply bolts into the same mounting position as the original. Just make sure that you’ve bled the cooling system correctly before going out for a drive.
