At BOFI Racing, we’ve teamed up with the company that originally coated the Mini superchargers to fit brand-new bearings and apply a brand-new Teflon rotor coating. Our reconditioned Mini M45 Superchargers will come fully prepared, serviced with new oil, and ready to bolt on. They’re also fully tested before they get to you, and are fully prepped for our SR1 Supercharger Kit.

What is a supercharger?

A supercharger is an air compressor that increases the pressure of air supplied to your car’s engine. This increase in air pressure produces higher power output as the engine gets more oxygen in each of its intake cycles. In turn, this helps your MX-5 to burn more fuel.

Fitting a supercharger to your MX-5 will offer a range of benefits if you’re after more punch, including substantial power gains, immediate power delivery, cost-effective power enhancement and minimal engine mods.

How do superchargers work?

Superchargers can be powered mechanically by a belt, shaft or chain connected to the crankshaft. There are also two types of superchargers: positive displacement and centrifugal. Simply put, positive displacement superchargers deliver a constant level of pressure increase at all engine speeds (RPM). This is why these superchargers often feel like fitting a larger engine with constant boost.

On the other hand, centrifugal superchargers make very low boost down low and maximum boost at the redline, which isn’t ideal.

What is the difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger?

The main difference between a supercharger and a turbocharger lies in their energy sources. A turbocharger is powered by a turbine in the exhaust stream, while a supercharger is driven directly by the engine via a belt, typically connected to the crankshaft.
