MX-5 Exhaust System Parts
Whether it’s turbocharged, supercharged or NA, fitting an unrestrictive, free-flowing exhaust system can do wonders for any MX-5. Read More...
The first part of the exhaust system is the manifold. This is where the gases exit the engine and enter the manifold. If you’ve got a turbo, this is also where the gases will be fed into the turbo. If this manifold is too restrictive, by either being too small or having unnecessary sharp turns, it can create unwanted back pressure which compromises performance. Once out of the manifold the gases travel through a down-pipe and enters the catalytic converter. This is the most restrictive part of the exhaust system by far and for track use and is often completely removed and replaced with a de-cat pipe. This is essentially a straight through pipe that replaces the catalytic converter section of your exhaust. Removing this may also net you a few extra horses if you’re using any kind of forced induction. After the cat, or de-cat pipe, comes a mid-pipe and back box. A back box and mid-pipe together is often called a cat-back exhaust system, as it comes out the back of the catalytic converter. The back box is where the noise of the engine is silenced. Usually, a back box is another part of the exhaust system that is fairly restrictive. To unleash as many horses as possible, we stock back boxes that not only allow the gases to flow freely but also sound significantly better than the standard exhaust.
