Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a cheaper ECU and a more expensive one?
Entry-level ECUs are better than ever, offering an impressive level of tuning flexibility. However, they typically only have limited safety features. Pricier ECU’s won’t necessarily make your car any faster, but they could save your engine from terminal damage if something goes awry while you’re on track (like a stuck wastegate or faulty fuel pump). The likes of ME442 Link ECUs can accommodate additional sensor inputs (like oil pressure and knock sensors), allowing them to detect when something isn’t right. They can then put the engine into limp mode to protect it. If you’ve spent the big bucks on a forged engine, this level of protection is well worth the extra investment! Many higher-end ECUs also come with special features built in, like traction control and launch control.

What is a ‘plug and play’ ECU?
Plug and play ECUs are the easiest way to upgrade your car’s engine management system. This is because, as their name suggests, they can be installed as a direct replacement for the factory unit. You won’t need to worry about rewiring your car or installing any adapters to fit them, saving a lot of time, hassle and money.

How do I know which ECU will be suitable for my build?
All the ECUs listed here will give your tuner plenty of control over fuelling, ignition timing and other crucial parameters. Even the most affordable ECUs offer plenty of flexibility nowadays, so the main advantage of pricier options is the amount of input and output options they have for additional sensors. This allows for more robust engine protection strategies and other advanced features such as traction control, boost by gear, knock control and flex fuel capability. They also provide even greater flexibility, making them ideal for more extreme builds. If you’re stuck and don’t know which ECU to opt for, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us for advice.
